While these two types of pumps may look similar, there’s a big difference between sewage and sump pumps. Which type you’ll need depends on what you need your pump to do. Their purposes are entirely different.

Sump pumps are generally used to remove any excess water (and onlywater) that might find its way into your home’s basement. This prevents flooding and water damage to your home and its contents. Most sump pumps will also have a battery backup system to keep it running when the power goes out (like in the event of a nasty rainstorm).

Sump pumps are placed inside a basin (or pit), located in the floor on the lowest level of your house. When water gets into the basin and triggers a float switch at a certain level, the sump pump kicks on and pumps the excess water out before it can cause damage.

Sewage pumps, on the other hand, are built to handle both water and solid waste (like what you find in raw sewage). When you flush your toilet, a sewage pump is what will take that wastewater — called black water due to the presence of solids — and pump it away from your home, out to municipal sewage or septic system.
