A bladder is a balloon inside a tank that fills with water when there is pressure that is greater than that already in the bladder. A check valve stops the water from flowing backwards and reserves the water and pressure for use by the device it is feeding. This unique design also eliminates the need for a pump, as the bladder will act as a pump that uses no power.

We have all been there before, we set the perfect shower temperature and flow. We jump in to enjoy the perfect shower. A few minutes into the shower and we are comfortable. Someone in the house flushes a toilet, turns on a faucet or turns on the washing machine. The water in the shower goes instantly hot and we are left running for cover so we don't get burned.

This happens because as more cold water is used, the pressure on the cold water line is lower than on the hot water line. Since the hot water side has more pressure, you get more hot water.

You can eliminate this problem by installing a pressure bladder on the cold water line going to the shower, toilet, pump, boiler or other device that grabs a lot of water in a short period of time.

Once the bladder is full and the line pressure drops from a toilet flush or because of some other momentary use, the bladder empties and makes up the difference. Even if the water is completely turned off, the water continues to flow at the normal pressure out of the bladder until the bladder is empty.

You can also use a bladder to feed other things such as dishwashers, boilers or other devices that use a lot of water initially. You can also use a bladder where you have a feed line that is too small or travels a long distance causing large pressure drops.

Bladder tanks are perfect to use before pumps. When a pump first starts up it 'sucks' water from the pipes. Pumps are damaged when they operate with the initial low pressure that happens normally. Placing a bladder before a pump can help reduce this damage and can cure systems with frequent low pressure alarms due to fluctuating line pressure.

Bladders are great for use in emergency situations. They are both a storage container and a delivery system that come in handy when the main water supply is not available and has fluctuating pressure. In case of natural disasters where you lose power to pumps or do not have water and electricity at the same time, a bladder is a very good emergency water supply. You can always install several bladders after a single check valve and add as much storage capacity as you desire.

A preventive maintenance program gives you a way to stay on top of your pump’s maintenance by creating a solid plan for its care.

It’s all too easy for pump owners to get into a cycle of reactive maintenance – working on the pump after problems occur.  This can easily lead to a stack of minor maintenance issues that continually cause trouble, while the owner can never afford the time and effort to get them all taken care of at once.  The result is a pump that’s malfunctioning more often than not, or at least running well below optimal specs.

With a preventative maintenance program in place, this can be avoided, by staying on top of any minor issues before they cause actual problems.

A solid maintenance program includes:
  • An overall series of goals, such as increasing productivity or decreasing downtime, which are expressed with solidly achievable numeric milestones.  These should be hard KPIs, measured and tracked.
  • Commitment to the program from upper management, with appropriate budget support.
  • Hardware or software systems for monitoring pump performance and reporting any deviations from expected norms that could signify a maintenance issue.
  • Trained technicians capable of recognizing these deviations and tracing them back to the source.
  • Long-term data tracking and reporting, to search for larger trends and better optimization strategies.
A preventive maintenance program can be tough to implement at first, but over the months and years ahead, it will pay for itself many times over.

The basic purpose of a water flow meter is simple: giving yourself an easily-accessed way of monitoring the speed and consistency of water – or other liquids – flowing through a pipe.  However, there are several different types of flow meters on the market, and not all of them are suitable for all applications.
A reliable pumping specialist can help you find the right flow meter for your needs, but for the best results, you should have some information on the situation.  Here are the factors you should consider before making a purchase.

The Most Important Factors When Choosing A Water Flow Meter

1 – Do you need the meter?
Occasionally, we see water pump sales staff pushing flow meters as though they’re standard, but they aren’t.  There’s no reason to have a flow meter at all unless you genuinely have a need to monitor the flow and pressure within your pipes.  For example, most small pumps for private water wells have little or no need for a flow meter.

2 – The substance being measured
Some types of water flow meters simply will not work with certain types of liquids.  For example, an electromagnetic flow meter is great for “touchless” monitoring that doesn’t disrupt the flow at all – but the liquid must have ionized particles in it that the meter can react with.

3 – The viscosity of the liquid
One of the big distinguishing characteristics between different types of flow meters is what viscosity they’re rated to handle.  This is often expressed as a number called the Reynolds Number, which rates the level of viscosity for which a flow meter is designed.  As long as you know either the viscosity of the fluid or the desired Reynolds Number for your meter, finding the right one is easy.

4 – The desired measurement range
What are the minimum and maximum measurements you expect to take from your pipes?  This is another important distinguishing feature of various flow meters that’s often called their “turndown.”  As with most meters and monitoring devices, you’ll be paying for larger ranges of measurement – so don’t pay for more than you actually need.

5 – Your desired level of accuracy
How critical are the measurements you’re taking?  How many significant digits of accurate readout are called for?  This is another area where it’s worth taking a step back and asking, “What do I really need?”  Ultra-precise water flow pumps are available, such as for industrial manufacturing use, but they are considerably more expensive.  This is another situation where there’s no reason to pay for more capabilities than your application calls for.

Installing a household pressure booster pump in your home is very important if you want to increase the pressure of water or if your relying on tank water to supply your house.  Household pressure pumps do a good job of raising the water pressure up to 60psi or more, depending on the model you buy. Make sure you follow our quick buying guide to learn the key considerations to make when buying a household pressure pump that matches your needs and requirements.
The process of buying a household pressure pump for your home isn’t always easy. This is because different models are made with different pressure boosting capabilities and you’ll need to know which one will suit your unique pumping needs.
However, paying attention to the following factors will help you find the right household pressure pump for your home:
  • Pressure rating: the highest level of pressure (expressed in pounds per square inch, psi) a pump can add to your home water system is one of the most important things to look for in a pressure booster pump. Work out the difference between the current water pressure and the normal water pressure of your system to get an idea of what pressure boost you’ll need.
  • Durability: you should also ensure that the pump you want to buy is made from durable materials for increased lifespan. Models made from stainless steel metal are usually corrosion-resistant and long-lasting.
  • Flow rate: the maximum flow rate of a household pressure pump (expressed in litres per minute, LPM) refers to the highest volume of water a pump can discharge in a minute. Knowing how much water you need to flow out of your home faucets will help you pick a pump with a matching flow rate.

If the water is taken from a municipal main pipe, Net Positive Suction Head Required (NPSHR) must be considered. This means that at "worst case conditions" (often considered as 150% of the rated pump capacity), there must be sufficient residual pressure at the inlet of the pump for the continued function of the municipal supply. This is especially critical for fire protection because the municipal piping might go on to supply other fire protection systems, even in the same building. As outlined by the NFPA 20 standard, "It should be noted that the use of residual pressures of less than 20 psig (1.4 barg) are not permitted by many state health departments.”

Where the Authority Having Jurisdiction or AHJ has no specific requirements regarding the NPSHR, there still remains a primary concern as to the ability to maintain sufficient residual pressure to prevent the development of negative pressure at any point in the street mains. Negative pressures could result in the collapse of the mains or other water system components, or back-siphonage of polluted water from some other interconnected source.
Avoiding cavitation in low pressure scenarios

Another problem emerging from a low suction pressure is the possibility of cavitation damage to the pump. Cavitation is a phenomenon that occurs when the water pressure falls to vacuum state and as a result, vapor bubbles are created. When the pressure is very low (or even negative) at the inlet suction of a pump, vapor bubbles form and pass into the pump. Under these conditions they do little damage. However, when the vapor bubbles reach the higher pressure created by the pump towards the outlet side of the impeller, they implode. This implosion of vapor bubbles creates very high pressure jets/waves that can rapidly weaken and erode the metallic parts of the pump, pit the metal and eventually drastically reduce pump functionality.

If the possibility of insufficient suction pressure does exist, then the most common and efficient solution is the installation of a pump suction control valve. This valve should be situated at the outlet side of the pump, with a sensing line to the suction or inlet side of the pump. When necessary, or when the suction pressure falls below the allowable or set minimum, the valve will regulate the inlet pressure to stay above a preset minimum.

Whether you are in a residential or commercial property, you’re always going to need hot water and having a convenient water heating system is recommended for this. We all realise just how important hot water is to our daily tasks.

Instant Access to Water Heater

This is probably the main reason why you want to have hot water systems installed: hot water on demand. Whether you choose a continuous or storage hot water system, you will still be able to get access to hot water almost immediately; at most, you’ll only need to wait for a minute or less.

Having an instant hot water unit means you will not need to manually fill up a container and heat it whenever you need your hot water. Now, all you need to do is open the ta

Save Energy

The more modern your hot water systems are, the more energy-efficient they will be. Old water heaters tend to use more energy, due to the technological limitations of their manufacturing period.
When you install a new hot water system, you will get near-instant access to hot water without the electric load that old water systems consume, which means that you’ll be able to save money.

Conserve Water

The worst thing that you could do to water is waste it. Water is one of the most precious resources we have, so it’s a given that we should treat it well. Usually, when heating water manually, we end up collecting more water than we need because possibly to save on energy costs. Unfortunately, excess hot water often gets drained or repurposed after it is cooled, which creates a waste of energy used to heat the water, or a waste of the water itself, or both.
With a continuous hot water system, you’ll only release hot water whenever you need it, so you would not need to gather more water than you need. A hot water system not only helps in conserving water, but it also contributes to lower energy costs.

Powered by electricity, these are probably the most common hot water systems used by, due to the relatively easy installation process. These are also the cheapest hot water system type in the market today.

Advantages

  • Relatively low upfront costs
  • Good choice for moderate water consumption
  • Easy to use and install
  • Space saving – continuous electric hot water systems do not require a tank.

Disadvantages

  • It can be more expensive in the long run due to the overall amount of electricity used, compared to other types of heaters.
  • You won’t have hot water during power outages. If your area has regular power outages, then this might not be the best one for you.
The second most popular water system in is the gas hot water system. If you need fast-heating of a higher volume of water, this should be your heater of choice.

Gas Hot Water Systems

Advantages

  • Provides hot water even during power outages.
  • Once installed, the operation cost of gas hot water systems is lower than electric versions.
  • Higher hot water recovery rate than electric heaters.

Disadvantages

  • Higher upfront costs than other types of unit
  • Small risk of gas malfunctions. Such as a leak, explosion or Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

1. AIR LEAK IN SUCTION LINE

As fluid recirculates in the pump and forces air out of the discharge chamber, it’s trying to create an area of low pressure. However, if there’s a leak in the suction line, air continues to be drawn into the pump, never allowing it to release enough to create that area of low pressure

2. DEBRIS IN THE IMPELLER

If the eye of then impeller is plugged with debris, it removes the hydraulic capability of the impeller to create an area of low pressure.

3. PUMP IS AIR BOUND

A pump can become air bound if it experiences any of these conditions:
  •     NO AIR RELEASE LINE
    •     If there is no air release line, air cannot be vented to the atmosphere, and instead collects on the discharge side.
  •     DISCHARGE LINE IS PRESSURIZED
    •     Valve on the air release line is closed, and the valve on the discharge line is closed, again, giving no place for the air to go and get out of the pump.
  •     EXCESSIVE IMPELLER CLEARANCE
    •     If there is excessive clearance between the impeller and the wear plate, the pump has a difficult time creating a low pressure area. This is typically caused by wear, but could also be due to improper reassembly.

4. PLUGGED RECIRCULATION PORT

During the priming process, as discussed above, fluid is recirculated through the volute casing. If the recirculation port becomes plugged, the eye of the impeller is unable to create an area of low pressure in which to pull liquid up the suction line.

5. LIFT TOO HIGH FOR PUMP SPEED OR IMPELLER DIAMETER

If you’ve undersized the pump for the suction line, it will not be able to create the low pressure area it needs to prime. It’s important to understand the suction lift requirements before selecting a pump for the application.

Self-priming centrifugal pumps are unique. As the name suggests, they have the ability to prime themselves under suction lift conditions.  They draw fluid up from tanks or pits below, making them easier and safer to work on than those that work below ground. Under the right conditions, they’ll free themselves of entrained gas and function normally on their own, but sometimes, they can’t. Why? What causes failure to prime in a self-priming pump?
In order to understand why we have to understand how a self-priming pump works.
Just because they’re able to pull fluid into them, doesn’t mean that they should start up dry!! Self-priming pumps need fluid in the casing to get started. Running dry, even for a short while, will cause damage to the mechanical seal, and pump failure.

Once the pump is turned on, the impeller begins to turn in a counter clockwise rotation. The fluid inside, or the “initial prime”, flows through the volute into the discharge cavity. Here, the air and fluid separate, the air evacuates through an open ended line, or air release line, while the fluid returns to the impeller through a recirculation port.

While the fluid is recirculated and the air is removed from the discharge cavity, low pressure is being created at the eye of the impeller. Atmospheric pressure is higher than the lower pressure created at the eye of the impeller, thus fluid is forced up the suction line.

As fluid moves up the suction line, the air ahead of the fluid is pushed into the casing and handled as the initial prime was handled through the recirculation process. Once the fluid arrives in the pump, it operates as normal.

Install Condition Monitoring Technology

There are a number of things you can try to prevent cavitation. You can re-evaluate the piping design leading to the pump, ensure the pump is running at its best efficiency point, among others. But there is also technology available for cavitation prevention. For more info talk to our engineer in water pump dubai.

Use Gauges:

Installing gauges within your pump system is always a good monitoring option. You can reference the gauges to understand where the pump is on the curve. If it is starting to fall off track, your pump might be having a cavitation problem that requires investigation.

Check Filters For Reduced Flow

Clogged filters are a common cause of cavitation issues. As debris and particulates gather in the filter, NPSHA is reduced if the pump is not sized correctly.

Shutting down production to clean filters and strainers isn’t exactly convenient either. However, there are ways around this.

Automatic self-cleaning filters like Eaton’s DCF and MCF series are popular choices for processes where production can’t be stopped. Self-cleaning filters are great because, as the name suggests, they clean themselves. Once installed, they automatically filter any solids or debris from whatever liquid you are pumping. They are known to improve pump efficiency while requiring minimal operator intervention. Click to see a video on how self cleaning filters work.
A duplex strainer, also known as a twin-basket strainer, filters and removes large particles of dirt or debris from liquid pumping systems. They never require downtime for cleaning because a valve is placed between the two baskets, changing the flow of liquid to one strainer while the other is being cleaned.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as they say, so it’s best to properly size your pump from the beginning and ensure the piping design fits the application.
But we know that flows and processes change over time, creating an unintentional chain of events that can sometimes cause a cavitation problem where there wasn’t one before. Take advantage of the technology now available to properly manage and monitor the pumps in your facility.
