A Wates Pressure Vessel is essential for maintaining stable pressure, absorbing thermal expansion, and protecting hot water systems from damage. However, like any mechanical component, it can experience issues over time. Knowing the common problems and how to fix them can save you from costly repairs and system downtime.
1. Loss of Pressure
Symptoms:
2. Waterlogging
Symptoms:
3. Corrosion or Rust Formation
Symptoms:
4. Frequent Safety Valve Discharges
Symptoms:
5. Unusual Noises
Symptoms:
1. Loss of Pressure
Symptoms:
- Reduced hot water flow
- Frequent pump cycling
- Safety valve activating more often
- Incorrect pre-charge pressure
- Air leaks from the Schrader valve
- Bladder or diaphragm damage
- Check and adjust pre-charge pressure (0.2–0.3 bar below pump cut-in pressure).
- Inspect Schrader valve for leaks and tighten or replace as needed.
- If the bladder is ruptured, replace it or the entire vessel.
2. Waterlogging
Symptoms:
- Vessel feels heavy and full of water
- No hollow sound when tapping the upper section
- Poor system pressure stability
- Bladder or diaphragm rupture
- Pre-charge air completely lost
- Drain the vessel and check for bladder integrity.
- Re-inflate to the correct pre-charge pressure if the bladder is intact.
- Replace bladder or vessel if damaged.
3. Corrosion or Rust Formation
Symptoms:
- Visible rust spots on vessel surface
- Brown water from hot water taps
- Pitting near connection points
- Damaged protective coating
- Prolonged exposure to moisture or aggressive water chemistry
- Clean and repaint affected areas with corrosion-resistant coating.
- Improve installation location ventilation and moisture control.
- Replace vessel if corrosion compromises structural integrity.
4. Frequent Safety Valve Discharges
Symptoms:
- Hot water escaping from the relief valve regularly
- Drop in system pressure after discharges
- Undersized vessel for system volume
- Incorrect pre-charge setting
- Faulty or worn safety valve
- Verify vessel sizing according to Wates guidelines.
- Adjust pre-charge pressure correctly.
- Replace faulty safety valve.
5. Unusual Noises
Symptoms:
- Banging, knocking, or vibration sounds during system operation
- Air trapped in system lines
- Vessel improperly secured
- Sudden pressure fluctuations
- Bleed air from the hot water system.
- Ensure vessel mounting is stable and secure.
- Check for pump or control issues causing pressure surges.
