Heating water for a day to day purposes is expensive because it requires a huge amount of electricity. But now this is no more a problem nowadays! We have got another option, which is Solar Water Heater for this we don’t need to rely on electricity. If you want to reduce energy consumption, the amount of energy you use each month, and saving money, purchasing a solar water heater is a great place to start. It is a great way to reduce the electricity bill associated with heating water by utilizing sunlight for use in homes, pools, recreational vehicles, and even boats.
Solar Water Heater utilizes the solar heat (sin light) radiations directly, which makes it more efficient and cost-effective. Solar water heaters are widely used in residential and industrial applications to reduce the water heating cost from 50% to 80% over electric water heaters. Therefore, solar water heaters are more affordable, used in any type of climate, and they provide a quick return on investment.
Solar Water Heater & Huge Electricity Saving
A solar water heater installs on the roof of any building where it can receive maximum sunlight, which on conversion generates thermal energy that heats water by using any system of the solar thermal collector (evacuated tubes or modules). No electricity is required for heating water in this way, thus saving electricity and reducing the bill.
For example, if a person chooses to use a solar water heater of just 100 liters per day capacity at a full scale, he or she can save up to 1000 units of electricity. Thus, the saved electricity units show a direct result in figures for the electricity bill. As compared to this, conventional electricity consumes a lot of energy so that it can be saved by using a solar water heater (one of the best ways to save electricity).
Power saving energy is much more for people living in the southern and western areas, and specifically, in central Indian locations like Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh, approximately 1500 units can save yearly.
What to take into consideration when choosing a solar water heating system?
When selecting the right solar water heater, there are certain factors to take into consideration. You should evaluate what you are currently spending to heat water, and determine the cost savings of switching to a solar water heater, where you get the most sun each day, what size of solar heating system you will need, what are the local codes or restrictions where you live. These factors will help you determine which kind of solar heating system is best for you.
Yes, consumers can save electricity bill by using a solar heater that depends on a few factors including:

On winter days without even sun rays, if it is for a day or two, you still get warm water as the water gets heated due to diffused radiation available in the atmosphere. For this reason, the solar water system should either connect to an electric geyser in the house or an electrical back-up provided in the storage tank of the system, and that should need to switch on when water is not sufficiently hot. So, you get hot water all the time even in extremely cold weather.
Now the concern is, how does a solar water heater work even in the wintertime? A liquid catalyst or radiator fluid is warmed by the sun’s energy in the solar water heating system, and after that, it is pumped into the heat exchange tank. The role of the heat exchange tank is in exchanging the heat of the fluid with water and warms the water in the storage tank. And, it’s important to remember that radiator fluid should be checked before winter starts to ensure proper heating of water.
In the winter season, solar evacuated tube systems can keep hot water pumping and saving your money. For example, when the average air temperature during the wintertime is some -15°C, a solar hot water heating system can continue to pump out water at 80°C. even in northern regions of India where constant sunlight and no cooling down period at night time are also able to allow the solar water heater system to be at almost maximum efficiency.
Another question arises, even if the outside temperature is low in winter, does it affect the solar water heater? No, it does not affect, because, with good insulation, sunlight in winter days will be able to heat the water quite well in a solar water heater. The hot water tank is caused by the radiation energy of the sun, which can come through the glass and heat enclosures, even if the outside temperature is below cold – providing good insulation can ensure very small heat loss. However, dim sunlight in winter reduces the heating capacity of most solar water heaters.
The solar water heating systems work well in cold temperatures? There are two key features, such as the vacuumed space between the layers of glass in the solar evacuated tubes and the absorber coating that allow the system to be efficient in cold temperatures. The vacuum between the layers of glasswork prevents the transfer of heat, and the solar water heaters protect the inner parts of the tube from the ambient temperature and allow light to still pass through the glass. Thereafter the metal plates of the tubes heat up with the full strength of the sun, regardless of how cold it is outside, and once captured, it is then very difficult for the heat to escape. Thus, almost all of the heat of the system can be conducted directly into the water.

An area often overlooked when the performance of a solar water heater is evaluated is how the back up is integrated in the hot water system. Assume that showers are taken early in the morning on a sunny day and the storage tank is depleted of hot water. If the back up system then fills the storage tank with hot water that morning there will be no room for solar produced hot water. If more hot water is not needed until the afternoon, the energy used to heat the water that morning will have been wasted.
This type of management problem can be eliminated if an on demand heater is used as the back up. Unfortunately, neither electric or gas back up are the perfect back up. The disadvantage of a gas back up is that even in the modulating heaters the heat cannot be turned down sufficiently. If, for example, you are taking a shower and your solar tank is at 100ºF you may only need a 10ºF boost in temperature to be comfortable but the on demand gas heater may unnecessarily boost the temperature 25ºF. To remain comfortable the cold water must then be turned up; water and energy are then wasted.
With an on demand electric heater the output can be modulated to a lower level so this problem is eliminated. However, electricity is a more valuable form of energy; three units of gas-produced heat energy must be expended to produce one unit of electrical energy so finding the ideal solution is not clear-cut. In my home I oversized my collectors so they would provide a large percentage of my hot water needs. In this situation, where I often only need a small boost in temperature, I use an on demand electric heater as a back up. To determine the best solution in a particular situation requires some whole system thinking: considering the demand size of the array, storage, and usage patterns etc.

What is solar insolation?
The amount of electromagnetic energy (solar radiation) incident on the surface of the earth. Basically that means how much sunlight is shining down on us.
Why is knowing the insolation level useful?
By knowing the insolation levels of a particular region we can determine the size of solar collector that is required. An area with poor insolation levels will need a larger collector than an area with high insolation levels. Once you know your region's insolation level you can more accurately calculate collector size and energy output.
What units are used to express Insolation levels?
The values are generally expressed in kWh/m2/day. This is the amount of solar energy that strikes a square metre of the earth's surface in a single day. Of course this value is averaged to account for differences in the days' length. There are several units that are used throughout the world.
The conversions based on surface area as follows:
1 kWh/m2/day = 317.1 btu/ft2/day = 3.6MJ/m2/day
The raw energy conversions are:
1kWh = 3412 Btu = 3.6MJ = 859.8kcal
Is my region's insolation level low, moderate or high?
Below are links to a list of insolation levels for main cities in each region. Although a value of 5 is not considered very high during the summer months, as an average annual value this is very high. You will see that in central Australia, which is a hot, sunny place, the annual average insolation is 5.89.
You may compare you location to the following two extreme locations.
Average annual insolation levels:
Central Australia = 5.89 kWh/m2/day - Very High
Helsinki, Finland = 2.41 kWh/m2/day - Very Low

We made some analysis based on installation and maintenance experiences as following:
1. Inner tank corrosion
The inner tank corrosion usually caused by local bad water quality, especially in the coastal areas. Cl and SO ion in the water (PPM>180mg/L) would corrode the inner tank.
Solution: replace the tank by SUS 316L inner material, or use the copper coil close loop thermosiphon system.
Attention area: coastal areas like Netherlands, Belgium, Italy or Mid-east like Jordan, Lebanon, etc.
2. Some of the welding position of the tank break
Some of the welding position of the tank break, especially the inlet/outlet. These breaks can’t be repaired or too expensive to be repaired.
Solution: replace by new tank.
3. Shrunken of the inner tank
Shrunken of the inner tank and which result the twist of the sealing rubber ring or other related outlet parts, the sealing system was damaged to leak. If the heat time is short to the solar water heater, however the water in the tank runs out with not long time, which could be caused by shrunken of the inner tank. The installation personnel without professional training would make the errors that the gas vent blocked or thinned. Elbow or bibcock added to the end of the overflow indoor by the users for beauty without the knowledge that the overflow pipe also has ventilatory function.
Shrunken of the inner tank usually appears in winter. The water level is high, however, the temperature of the original water in the tank is too low, the air vent would be blocked by the ice. Once the inner tank shrunken, the tank scrap.
Solution: ask the distributer to replace a new tank if caused by installation.
4. Sealing rubber ring worn, aged
Sealing rubber ring worn, aged. Clutters stick to the inner circle of the sealing ring would effect the sealing between the sealing rubber ring and the vacuum tube and venting or inlet/outlet components which would cause water seepage.
Solution: replace the sealing rubber ring.
Hot water tank users should treat the leaking phenomenon cautiously. The water would infiltrate into the insulation layer which would make the tank fail to preserve heat.

Magnesium rod is a kind of metal substance that softens water to prevent water from scaling. Magnesium rod is commonly known as magnesium anode, also known as anode magnesium block. It is used to prevent corrosion and soften the water quality of the metal tank of solar water heaters and electric water heaters. In the use of TISCO or manganese steel metal liner, the electrochemical anticorrosive sacrificial anode protection principle of the metal in the water is used to use the magnesium rod as the anode and the metal liner as the cathode. In this way, a galvanic cell is formed between the cathode and the anode through a conductive water medium. The anode of the battery-the magnesium rod, is consumed by corrosion, while the cathode-the metal inner conductor is protected.
In the solar water heater, the magnesium rod is installed in the middle of the metal inner tank. When the enamel coating on the surface of the metal liner is complete, the enamel shields the metal liner, the insulation resistance between the magnesium rod and the metal liner can reach more than 2MΩ, and the anode output current of the magnesium rod is almost zero. However, when the enamel liner partially cracks, a small resistance is formed between the magnesium anode and the metal liner through water. The magnesium anode starts to output current and flows to the exposed metal liner to produce a polarized film to repair the damage The enamel insulates the inner tank of Jinyu to prevent corrosion. Because the magnesium anode consumes itself when outputting current, it is called the sacrificial anode method.
Many users have been using Sunflower solar water heaters since they bought Sunflower solar water heaters. They don’t know that there are magnesium rods that silently protect the inner barrel of our water heaters. If the water quality is good, it will not cause any impact for several years or even more than ten years. If you are careful, you will find out. , The water in the water heater is not so much, or the water temperature is not high, this is that after the magnesium rod is exhausted, the scale formation is accelerated, and the formed scale is attached to the inner tank of the water heater and the vacuum tube wall of the solar water heater, and the more it gathers. Then it will fall off layer by layer or piece by piece, and the scale that falls off will gather at the bottom of the inner tank, and the solar water heater will gather at the bottom of the vacuum tube. This is the reason why the water is getting less and less. So why does solar water heater heat slowly? The vacuum tube of a solar water heater is like the heating tube in an electric water heater. Over time, there is a layer of drain on the inner wall of the vacuum tube, which also affects heat exchange. So the heating time will become slower and slower.

It is recommended that solar water heaters need to add or replace magnesium rods in 2-3 years according to the water quality.

A sacrificial anode by virtue of its name ‘sacrifices’ itself for the benefit of the hot water tank. Using the principles of electrochemical processes when two different metals are immersed in water one will corrode away to protect the other. Sacrificial magnesium anodes are used in hot water tank acting as the less noble metal and corrodes to protect the inner tank of the hot water tank.
Sometimes the quality of water prevents magnesium anodes from corroding. These water conditions are typically soft water. The low electrical conductivity in soft water reduces electrical flow from anode to cathode (inner tank) through the water. This stops the anode from corroding and therefore won’t protect the inner tank.
When inspecting the anode in these applications it could appear in excellent condition. However this may be an indication that the anode is not working and the heater is at risk.
What is a powered anode?
Powered anodes, or impressed current anodes, are non-sacrificial. The metal of the anode is titanium and theoretically will last the lifetime of the hot water tank.
Powered anodes use an electrical supply to produce a very low current into the water to replace the electrolytic current produced by sacrificial anodes.
It is good practice to remove the sacrificial anode (if already installed) from the hot water tank to maximise protection.
Which anode protection should I use for my hot water tank?
It depends on the area of the you are in and your choice of hot water tank.
Things to consider when choosing anode protection for your water tank:
Hardness of the water
Sacrificial anodes often don’t work in soft water areas due to the low electrical conductivity. But a powered anode in certain soft water areas may also have no effect in protecting the cylinder shell as the conductivity of the water, which the powered anode requires, may still be too low.
Site conditions
If the site is prone to electrical supply failures then powered anodes should not be used as without a power supply the hot water cylinder will not be protected from corrosion.
Cost and installation
Electrical anode protection can be more expensive initially due to a higher purchase price and the additional electrical connections that are needed for installation. However, over the lifetime of the unit they could be more cost effective than maintaining and replacing sacrificial anodes.
Again, all this needs to be considered in relation to the site and individual project.
Maintenance
Electrical supply and connections are needed for powered anodes. However powered anodes come with an indicator red or green LED to help you identify the status of the protection system.
Sacrificial anodes require maintenance and will corrode at different rates depending on the location. Regular inspection is required by an engineer to check the state of the anodes. You will need to learn how quickly the anodes deteriorate and therefore how often they need changing.
