An expansion tank which contains a bladder is known as a bladder tank. A bladder expansion tank is a system which is used for heating and cooling purposes by absorbing the expansion force. It uses compressed air to adjust with the pressure changes by eliminating or accepting the water volume changes as it expands or contracts due to heating and cooling. A pre-charged bladder tank is an expansion tank which is already charged with air. Bladder expansion tanks offer the benefit of replacing the bladder as and when required.
The bladder separates the expanded water from air. This way, the water does not come into contact with tank and it prevents corrosion by oxygen and rusting. It also increases the pump life by reducing the number of pump cycles. This system prevents water clogging by using an air wall between the interior of the tank and the exterior of the bladder.

An Overview of Diaphragm Tanks
Diaphragm tanks are water vessels which are subject to a high amount of pressure. These tanks

The diaphragm keeps the water and air separate inside the vessel. Diaphragm tanks work in a similar manner as bladder tanks. The key difference lies in the fact that one system uses bladders and the other uses diaphragms. Diaphragms cannot be replaced from a tank.
It keeps the system from being waterlogged and prevents absorption of air. This way, it protects water heating and cooling systems.

What is the difference between a bladder tank and a diaphragm tank?
A bladder tank contains a vinyl tank inside it. A bladder tank can be replaced as and when required.
On the other hand, a diaphragm tank contains a rubber flat diaphragm, a butyl tank or a vinyl tank that is mounted on it. The diaphragm is kept attached in the internal area of the tank. Therefore, it cannot be replaced.
Both the tanks, bladder and diaphragm, have the same functionality.

Whether you have installed a new pressure tank or your old tank is losing air pressure, balancing it properly will prolong the pump life and give you a steady water pressure. All you need to balance your pressure tank is a tire gauge, an air compressor or a bike pump, and a lot of energy! If you need any assistance, Boulder/GNC Water Well is always here to help.

Steps to Follow Before Balancing Your Pressure Tank
Before you attempt to balance your pressure tank, make sure that the tank bladder is not burst. Check this by following the below-given instructions:
  • Shut down the power to your pumping system
  • Turn on the faucet until the water stops. This ensures that there’s no water left in the tank
  • Most tanks can be wiggled back and forth. Shaking it too hard can cause a break in your plumbing. As you shake the tank lightly, if it feels heavier than it should or you hear water sloshing inside it, please give us a call. Our certified technician will come to your home to evaluate the condition of your tank and repair it, if necessary
  • You’re now ready to balance your tank

Instructions to Balance Your Pressure Tank
  • Run water from a faucet and note the pressure at which the pump turns on and off
  • Turn off the power to the pump. Turn the faucet on until the pressure gauge reads 0 and the water stops
  • Check the air pressure in the tank with a tire gauge at the air valve located on the tank
  • Adjust the air pressure in the tank with your compressor or bike pump to 2 psi less than the pump turn-on point. If you have a low-pressure cutoff switch, you may want to set it to 5 psi less than the cut-on point
  • Turn the power to your pumping system back on
  • Run water and watch the pressure gauge to see if the on / off cycle is smooth
  • If the needle has any fast jumps, repeat the above steps
If the problem persists after repeating the above steps, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Have our technician come over to your home and assess the condition of your tank and repair it for you, if necessary. We provide 24/7 emergency services for your convenience!

Raise the Pressure of Your Pump
If your pump is unable to produce more pressure, you can adjust the pressure switch and rebalance the pressure tank to achieve greater pressure. To change the pressure setting, you’ll need a 5/16” hollow-stemmed nut driver, a voltmeter, a tire gauge, and an air compressor or a bike pump.

Both the pressure settings (30/50, 40/60 and so on) and the 20 psi factory preset range (on at 40, off at 60) can be altered. However, we recommend that you don’t change the preset range or raise the pressure over 65 psi on most switches.

1. Gravity
Gravity either drives or slows water flow. The higher the elevation where water must be delivered, the lower the water pressure. Not to mention, one gallon of water weighs over 8 pounds. If water travels uphill or up several floors, gravity wants to send it right back down. Buildings lower than their water source may not experience the same problem. Skyscrapers, apartment buildings, and homes and businesses with multiple stories require a large booster pump to move water up many stories.

2. Distance from the water source
Distance from the water source and the size of water pipes affects water pressure. If your home or business sits at the end of the water supply line, the flow of water might be low by the time it reaches you. And, if your water pipes are too small, a smaller amount of water will run through your fixtures.

3. Low city water pressure
Your house may be below the water supply line, your plumbing pipes may be clear, and you still have low water pressure. Sometimes low water flow results from low-pressure water from your local water plant.

4. Additional water systems
Additional water treatment systems or other water fixtures to your home brings you fresh water but may decrease your water pressure. Adding a booster pump can restore your water pressure.

5. Plumbing problems
If low water pressure is the result of gravity, transportation, or additional systems, a water pressure booster may fix the issue. Other times, however, plumbing problems may be the cause. Before buying a water pressure booster, check your plumbing. The pipes may be clogged, or the pressure reducing valve may need adjusting.

The most common symptom of an issue with your booster pump is the lack of pressure in your pressure vessel. If you go from an invigorating blast to a simple dribble, then you know you have an issue. Make these checks below. Please keep in mind that for some of these issues you may need to contact a plumber.

Leaking Pump

Pump seals can deteriorate over time. Perform a thorough inspection of your booster pump. Is it leaking? Do any of the seals look defective? If so, then you could be losing some of the pressure in your system.

Airlocks

Another common booster pump problem is airlock. This is where air has entered the pump and is now restricting the flow rate. To solve this issue the pump will need bleeding. Most high quality shower pumps will come with a bleed switch. This will allow you to follow the instructions in your shower pump installation guide to bleed the pump. Failing this, you may need to contact a plumber.

Blocked Pump Filters

One of the most common issues with a newly fitted shower pump is blocked pump filters. This can be due to debris getting into the pump during installation. You will need to ensure that the electric and water supply is switched off before giving the pump a thorough clean.

Frozen Pipes

Just like other pipes in your home, during a cold winter, a booster pump is likely to freeze. Take the time to warm the cold feed pipe to ensure ice doesn’t cause damage to the booster pump.
