Dewater the Tank
You have to drain all the water first by opening a tap outlet to let the water out. You can also use hosepipes so you can direct the water to a safe area without causing erosion. Use a sanction machine or dry vacuum cleaner to dry the tank completely.
Mix the Cleaning Product
Make a cleaning mixture by adding some mild and laundry detergent in hot water. This is helpful in sediments removal and getting rid of the residues from the tank.
Cleaning the walls
Start by scrubbing the walls of the tank thoroughly using the cleaning mixture and a bristle brush. Do it around all the walls applying more pressure as you move your hands horizontally and getting rid of all the sticky dirt.
Clean the inside of the tank
Scrub the inside of the tanks thoroughly to get rid of the sediments and scum. You, however, must ensure that you have the best resin for best results and not only that, make sure that you have prepared the tank well for cleaning. Fill your power washer with the cleaning mixture (the one you made from water and detergent). If you realize that the solution is getting harder with time, add acetone to dissolve
Hold the washer in the best position and distance that will work for you in removing all the dirt and sediments. Repeat the procedure until you are satisfied with the results. Note that you should be wearing protective gear such as gloves and glasses throughout the process.
Rinsing dirt from the dark
Now that you have already scrubbed off the sediments from the floor and wall of the tank, it is time to rinse the tank with purely clean water. You can use hose and pipes for this. The other option is filling the tank with hot water, wait for it to stand for some time before draining it and repeat the process until all the sediment and detergent is swept off.
Drying the tank
It is time to get rid of any water residues, and the best way to go about it is using a vacuum to dry it off until there are no traces of dirty water.

When Tank Reline takes on a job to re-line a water tank, the work is guaranteed, therefore in the unlikely event the tank needs follow-up care, Tank Reline would be on hand. The majority of manufacturers of new water tanks in the UK can only offer a 12-month guarantee. Tank Reline is unaware at this time of any UK manufactures/installers that offer longer than 12 months warranty for new water tanks. Once the 12 months has passed, the client is left to manage any after-care themselves (ultimately the system is not covered under any warranty and the client is left with the problem).
2. Save Money
Replacing a water tank in its entirety can be a demanding job, which comes with huge expense. Opting to reline instead of replacing will save you money and provide you with a guarantee.
3. Save Time
A complete replacement tank is a very big job, and one that should not be undertaken lightly. By opting to reline the water tank instead of replacing you keep disruption to your business to an absolute minimum and you can expect the work to be completed in a much quicker turnaround.
4. Water safety
When Tank Reline undertake a re-line, a full on-site assessment will be completed using the latest technology on a PDA based system which is instantly reported back to our project team achieving a prompt response. This is because we want to ensure we have advised you on the best and most appropriate course of action. We also offer a range of services which run hand in hand with relining a tank. For example, Tank Reline offers a clean and disinfection/chlorination service upon completion of a reline which means the tanks are cleaned in accordance with the latest health and safety guidelines, giving our clients additional peace of mind and results in our client not needing to return to site to commission the system themselves. This is one thing most of our competitors do NOT offer (so please be aware of this when reviewing quotation proposals). Let us do all this for you, leaving you with your other water treatment services for your client instead.
5. Protect against corrosion
Unfortunately, the way in which potable steel water tanks are designed they can be susceptible to general wear and tear and corrosion. Although this is inevitable during the life cycle of a water tank, the exclusive coating Tank Reline use when relining tanks fights against this corrosion because of its high-build solvent free ingredients.

Here are the 5 steps to follow when relining a water tank;
Structure: The most important factor when relining a water tank is firstly to assess the structural integrity which requires a site inspection before works commence. Tank Reline has a breadth of experience working with a variety of structural tanks of all sizes, therefore are well equipped to take on any job., of any size.
Preparation: Preparation is the crucial element to all tank reline jobs. If the preparation is completed incorrectly or inadequately then it is highly likely the tank reline will not work. Tank Reline has been drafted in on a number of occasions to resolve a variety of issues where inexperienced contractors have failed to undertake the works correctly.
Application Process: It is vitally important to follow the step-by-step application requirements when relining a water tank. For example, the usual procedure is; stripe coat of all joints and shapes edges – first full coat (in line with the manufacturers guidance) – second coat – final coat.
Quality: Upon completion of the tank reline, it is necessary to conduct quality checks to ensure film thickness has been achieved to the specification required. On many occasions Tank Reline has been contracted to re-do a job where a previous, inexperienced contractor has failed to ensure the film thickness and single coat application are correct. This double error will always cause a breakdown in the tank relining process and the job will more than likely need re-doing.
Guarantee: Various contractors will offer some sort of guarantee, so always ensure you fully understand the guarantee on offer and what it covers. Quite often, the guarantee provided includes unfair conditions and exclusions, or worse, elements of the job are not covered once the issues are raised and disputed.
Tank Reline launched its Gold Package warranty in 2017, which includes an annual site visit by a Tank Reline specialist engineer to inspect the water tank reline and report back to the client with findings. This means, Tank Reline works closely with the client throughout the guarantee period. The majority of our competitors simply offer a promise on a piece of paper, frequently filled with conditions and exclusions which are never accountable if there is a dispute. This is where Tank Reline pride themselves on their customer service and hope this service sets them apart from their competitors.
If you would like to discuss your job in more depth or you have an upcoming tank reline job, please contact our dedicated team to discuss the work and receive a no obligation quote. The answer is that the the upfront advantage of having a hot water tank over having a tankless option is the price tag, which can sometimes be as much as 75% less expensive. The downside is the utilities are considerably different.
It depends on the cost of the utilities in your area, but often times it’s about 1/3 of the cost of utilities going from a gas tank to a gas tankless. If you’re planning on moving in the next few years, I would say probably just put a tank in because you’re not going to recoup your money. In order to actually make a profit you’ll need to use it for a period of, let’s say ten years at least. However, the life span of tankless can be as long as 20 years, or even 25 depending on the water in your area.
Something else that we get asked about quite often is putting in an electric tankless to replace their electric hot water tank. Electric tankless versus gas tankless is not a very good option in any way, shape or form. They’re expensive and they are maybe10% more efficient than an electric hot water tank, so totally not worth it.
On the comfort side of things, there’s a difference between how the two operate. A tank can almost run an unlimited number of faucets, so let’s say you have four bathrooms in the house and two kitchens. You can turn on everything in the house BUT it will quickly drain the tank down. You could probably run it for about ten minutes and the whole thing will be drained. The advantage of the tank is the fact that you have an unlimited amount of faucets that you can run simultaneously. The problem is that they run out quite quickly.
The tankless option has the opposite problem. It can run a limited number of faucets, sometimes as low as two and as high as six or seven, again depending on the area of the country that you’re in. If you’re in the southern United States or somewhere where the ground water is warmer you’re going to get more hot water that comes out of your tap because the starting temperature is higher.
If you’re in the northern states, you’re going to have less output out of it because the starting temperature of the water is colder. Everything in general is going towards tankless water heaters, as a general rule, so probably in 10, 20 years they’re going to be the dominant option.
